Agiorgitiko is a popular red Greek grape variety, autochthonous.

Characteristics and regions

Known for its high quality, production volume and wide variety of wine styles that can be achieved from it. As a rule, it gives the wine a hint of plum, but the style and taste is highly dependent on the terroir: in the valleys – soft wines, in the hills – with high acidity and fruity tones. The most serious examples are full-bodied, not alcoholic, have deep undertones, give notes of tangy red fruit, and pair well with the undertones that come from oak barrels. At the same time, the result also largely depends on the skill of winemakers. Single varietal wine of Nemea appellation and blended with Cabernet Sauvignon in other regions.

Origin

Agioritiko comes probably from Argolis and Corinthia, the eastern part of Peppolones in Greece. Translated from Greek, the name of the variety means "St. George's grape", apparently in honor of the small chapel of St. George in Nemea in the northeastern part of Peppolones, or in honor of the village of the same name.

It is believed that, like other Greek varieties, this variety has existed since ancient Greek times, but confirmation of this hypothesis, such as genetic analysis, has not yet been found.
