Avesso is a white Portuguese grape variety. Among other varieties, it is used to make the most famous wine of Portugal, vinho verde – “green wine” (Vinho Verde DOC), i.e. young, fresh. The berries are yellow-green, conical in shape. Avessu is used in blends to impart high acidity and high alcohol levels. By itself, rough, fruitful, ripens early enough. Grows best in dry, infertile soil on a granite base.
Synonyms: Avessa, Avesso
In skillful hands, wines can be aromatic and harmonious, with hints of flowers and minerals. In cooler conditions, it exhibits shades of white peach, and in warmer conditions – ripe nectarine. If the grapes are grown in sunny areas, they can bring notes of tropical fruits, such as mango, to the bouquet. Often the aroma of wines is bright and intense.
The name "avesso" means "reverse" in Portuguese. Perhaps the grape is so named because, unlike other varieties from which Vinho Verde is made, it allows you to achieve high acidity and a high level of alcohol in wine. It was first mentioned in written sources in 1896. It has low genetic diversity, which may indicate that the variety is quite young. Grown in the Minho (also called Vinyu Verde) region in northern Portugal. This grape gives the wine full body, fresh acidity and fruitiness.
