Abbuoto is a rare grape variety from Central Italy. Comes from the province of Frosinone in Lazio. Its synonym Cecubo comes from the mistaken belief that it was this variety that produced the famous Caecubum, one of the best wines of Italy in Roman times, mentioned by Horace, Pliny the Elder. Recent DNA analysis has shown that the variety may have originated from a natural cross between Piedirosso and Casavecchia, but this contradicts the fact that Abbuoto is considered one of the ancestors of Casavecchia. The berries are medium to large in size, with a thick skin. Average period of maturation. Grown mainly in Central Italy, especially in Fiuggi, Sessa Aurunca, Fondi, Formia, Monte San Biagio and Terracina. It produces wines that are usually high in alcohol, with good aging potential, but they lose color quickly.
Synonyms: Cecubo
